Our project News for Nature: Communicating Threats to the Conservation of Primates in Guinea-Bissau’s Media, funded by the Born Free Foundation, aimed to make primate conservation visible and a central theme for the Guinea-Bissau society. The initial plan, however, quickly expanded to promote more than primate conservation. Our main goals are to highlight Guinea-Bissau’s rich biodiversity and alert it to the country's environmental threats.
Our methods involve academic research and working with Guinea-Bissau journalists, musicians and theatre groups to develop an educational campaign to protect the environment.
O nosso projeto Notícias para a Natureza: comunicar ameaças à conservação dos primatas nos meios de comunicação social da Guiné-Bissau, financiado pela Born Free Foundation, teve como objetivo tornar a conservação dos primatas visível e um tema central para a sociedade guineense. O plano inicial, no entanto, expandiu-se rapidamente para promover mais do que a conservação dos primatas. Os nossos principais objetivos são destacar a rica biodiversidade da Guiné-Bissau e alertá-la para as ameaças ambientais do país.
Os nossos métodos envolvem pesquisa académica e trabalho com jornalistas, músicos e grupos de teatro da Guiné-Bissau para desenvolver uma campanha educativa para promover a proteção do meio ambiente.
Who we are
Our team is made up of a group of academics and researchers with a range of backgrounds, such as conservation biology, primatology, journalism and media, and environmental communication. For more than ten years, we have been conducting research in Guinea-Bissau and have been amazed by the country's diverse biodiversity. Along the way, we've had the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of individuals and groups around the world who share our passion for conservation and protecting natural resources. Our objective is to establish a platform that advocates for the preservation of biodiversity. The platform will feature educational content and activities related to environmental awareness, as well as the dissemination of scientific information and alerts regarding environmental concerns.

A nossa equipa é constituída por um grupo de académicos e investigadores com formação diversificada, como biologia da conservação, primatologia, jornalismo e media e comunicação ambiental. Há mais de dez anos que fazemos investigação na Guiné-Bissau e ficamos maravilhados com a diversidade da biodiversidade do país. Ao longo do caminho, tivemos a oportunidade de colaborar com uma variedade de indivíduos e grupos em todo o mundo que compartilham nossa paixão pela conservação e proteção dos recursos naturais. O nosso objetivo é estabelecer uma plataforma que defenda a preservação da biodiversidade. A plataforma contará com conteúdos educativos e atividades relacionadas com a sensibilização ambiental, bem como a divulgação de informação científica e alertas sobre preocupações ambientais.

We worked with the local community drama group Netos do Bandim and Radio Sol Mansi and produced a radio theatre piece about the environmental problems in Guinea-Bissau. You can listen to the three radio-theatre episodes here.

We produced an exclusive track composed by world-renowned Guinea-Bissauan musician Karyna Gomes. In this song called Mato I Bida (The forest is life), Karyna sings in Guinean Kriol about the importance of the forests for the population and for the fauna in Guinea-Bissau. The song opens with the words of Dame Jane Goodall, who kindly agreed to take part in this musical experience. Listen to the track and watch the video here
